Bird view on the House of Art; video: Michael Radeck

The mission of Schafhof is to promote European ideals and enrich the region’s cultural life. Therefore the District of Upper Bavaria provides scholarships for contemporary artists from all over Europe.

The location in the midst of nature and the exceptional architecture create an atmosphere in which artists can concentrate on their own work, while they can also integrate into the rich contemporary art scene of Munich and Upper Bavaria.

During the residency, Open Studio Days offer the opportunity for direct contact between the artists and the public. The artists house offers consultations and organised programmes to ensure contact with the local and regional art scene. We help obtain raw materials and equipment, and assist in establishing professional connections.

The European House of Art Upper Bavaria usually organises two periods of artists' exchange with European countries every year. The exchange programme is based on a temporary partnership with a cultural institution in the partner country.

Individually artists cannot apply to the artist-in-residence programme at Schafhof so far. But we are looking for partner institutions all the time and we welcome recommendations for potential partners by artists too.

The European House of Art in Upper Bavaria has three comfortable live-in studios for visiting artists. The programme is addressed to freelance and professional artists of all genres.
